Welcome to my World

Welcome to the domain different--to paraphrase from New Mexico's capital city of Santa Fe which bills itself "The City Different." Perhaps this space is not completely unique but my world shapes what I write as well as many other facets of my life. The four Ds figure prominently but there are many other things as well. Here you will learn what makes me tick, what thrills and inspires me, experiences that impact my life and many other antidotes, vignettes and journal notes that set the paradigm for Dierdre O'Dare and her alter ego Gwynn Morgan and the fiction and poetry they write. I sell nothing here--just share with friends and others who may wander in. There will be pictures, poems, observations, rants on occasion and sometimes even jokes. Welcome to our world!

Monday Memoir Nov 2, 1968

The calendar turned to a new month and somehow I began to get into a college student mode again, pushing the back story junk into a dark corner, out of sight and mind--at least mostly. I began to get interested in some of my classes and even to look around and see who might be a possible future special person to me. No boys, of course but there were a lot of males around, even some worthy to call men..  The field of possibles was not too vast as I was always a bit choosy but even looking was a step forward. One spoiler--the names I mention in this narrative were not the significant one I alluded to last week.

I must say that this week created a two page report, written in red ink, a throwback to an early habit in my initial journal efforts. At that time ink colors were to convey meaning on what sort of day it was. Black was dark, dismal and hard; blue was generally okay but not special; red was  like really a red letter day and sometimes purple or turquoise indicated a fine or unique day. No green? Maybe I did not have one. But Lindy ballpoints were in many colors and I had a collection of them.

October 28, 1968  Monday

Well, I have had my store bought teeth (tooth actually) for about 72 hours now. The first twelve I nearly blew my mind. I still cannot talk quite right and it is a little rough to eat but I am making it. Yesterday afternoon Mary and I went for a hike down through campus and out along 1-40 west (?) I guess we went sbout five miles, I enjoyed every minute of it but i guess I wore Mary out. It was a beautiful day and today was too. Winter is not here yet.

I really can't quite beleive it myself and am sure I have blown what is left of my mind. He isn't my type at all, even if he doesoften wear cowboy boots and wesern shirts. Beegee or Benjy as I call him mentally, is Dr Guy Bensusan, currently teaching Latin America to 1810 (History) . I guess it is just to liven up the dullness. It hit me suddenly; I must have dreamed or forgotten it. To the best I can acertain, he is happily married. My 'crush' will  pass, doubtless. I recall the time he looked at my earrings which startled me half out of my skin. That was several weeks ago. He teases me some but not as familiarly as some who he's obviously known in the past. It's really weird--definitely not the bloke's looks. He's almost really yech biut I guess the personality comes through. All the kids seem to love him. Acording to Lila Kunkle, he makes fabulous drinks. How one gets into that 'in crowd' I don't know. I didn't even realize he had a PhD--from UCLA yet. By reckoning, he is 36, only ten years my senior, well almost eleven. I guess it was really last Monday after he';'d been sick for a week. He'd grown these new style sideburns and looked a bit pale.  At first I did not think I'd like the class at all but I do now and even agree that it always passes too fast.

The "Golden Boy" (Erickson, teaching anthropology) is a lot better looking and probably five to eight years younger. Not a doctor yet, but somehow he does not quite come across though I'll admit the first time I saw him  I did look and think "Not bad." He's from Colorado. Then there is John-John, the bonny Scot, a fellow student. I'm undecided about him but he is rather interesting and has a good face to draw with semi-hollow cheeks etc. He looks like a  Scot. Benjy is apparently Jewish with perhaps some English and German.. And one could draw him totally with circles!. He needs to lose about 25-50 pounds (minimum!)

Note: I later learned he was related to the Jewish Hispanic settlers in northern New Mexcio and has a natural affinity for Mexico and Latin America, frequently weaving cultural aspects into the history. That left him almost split between history and humanities, more about that aspect later. I looked into the history of those people a bit; very interesting.

*****

Slighty relevent photos-I mentioned coloring my hair red in a recent post and then spoke of an upcoming visit to the folks in San Lorenzo, NM. This pic was at that time --I did have somewhat red hair and that old Chevy came from Sacramento in the move.  The other is Charlie Mik,e at one of the adobe shed on the place they lived, with one of the puppies he adopted. This may have been Dingo who stayed with them for many years and eventually died in Duncan, AZ as a very old dog.
